The Challenge
Jebunisha Tai, a beneficiary from the project area, had a normal delivery, and initially, both mother and child were stable. However, soon after birth, the newborn developed extremely sensitive skin — the skin started peeling off automatically, making the baby highly vulnerable.
As a precaution, the baby was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for 15 days for close monitoring and specialized care. Her family, especially her mother-in-law, was deeply concerned and frequently reached out to the team for guidance and support.
The situation involved several challenges:
- Newborn with extremely sensitive and fragile skin
- High risk of infection due to skin condition
- Anxiety and fear among family members
- Lack of proper awareness regarding handling and hygiene for such cases
This condition required extra care, hygiene, and proper handling practices to ensure the baby's safety and recovery.
The Solution
Hygiene Counselling: Detailed counselling on maintaining strict hygiene practices, including handwashing, clean surroundings, and careful handling of the baby to prevent infections.
Newborn Care Guidance: Demonstrated and explained how to handle the baby gently, considering the skin sensitivity.
The Outcome
With proper care and guidance:
- The family became more confident and well-informed in handling the baby
- Hygiene practices were strictly followed, reducing risk of infection
- The baby's skin condition gradually improved
- After NICU care and home-based support, the baby is now healthy and stable
