Case Study: Premature Twin Care — Pawananagar
Beneficiary: Deepali Kamble
Area: Pawananagar
Program: Project Vatsalya
The Challenge
Deepali Tai, a beneficiary from the project area, experienced a high-risk pregnancy due to low hemoglobin (Hb) levels, which led to complications during delivery. She underwent a cesarean section (C-section) and delivered premature twin babies.
At birth:
- Child 1 weight: 1400 grams
- Child 2 weight: 1300 grams
- Both babies were low birth weight and required immediate medical attention
- The newborns were admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for 15 days
Deepali Tai was extremely stressed and anxious due to the babies' critical condition and the overall situation.
The case involved multiple challenges:
- Maternal anemia leading to premature delivery
- Low birth weight twins requiring NICU care
- High emotional stress and anxiety in the mother
- Lack of awareness regarding newborn care practices
- Need for family involvement in postnatal care and hygiene
These factors posed serious risks to both maternal recovery and neonatal survival and growth.
The Solution
The project team provided intensive, continuous support through multiple interventions:
Frequent Home Visits & Emotional Support: Regular visits were conducted to provide mental and emotional support, helping Deepali Tai cope with stress and anxiety.
Breastfeeding Counselling: Guidance on early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding to ensure proper nutrition for low birth weight babies.
Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC): Training and encouragement on skin-to-skin contact (KMC) to improve babies' weight gain, immunity, and bonding.
Hygiene & Newborn Care Counselling: Education on maintaining strict hygiene practices to prevent infections, especially critical for premature babies.
Family Counselling: Her mother-in-law and husband were counselled on supporting the mother emotionally, maintaining hygiene at home, and assisting in newborn care and feeding practices.
Diet & Routine Guidance: Advised on maintaining a nutritious diet and proper schedule for faster maternal recovery and effective caregiving.
The Outcome
With consistent intervention and family support:
- Deepali Tai's confidence and emotional stability improved
- She successfully adopted breastfeeding and Kangaroo Mother Care practices
- The family actively participated in maintaining hygiene and care routines
Significant improvement in the babies' health and weight:
- Child 1 weight increased from 1400g to 2.5 kg
- Child 2 weight increased from 1300g to 2.3 kg
Both mother and twins are now healthy and stable.
