The Story
In the urban slum communities where we work, emotional distress often remains invisible. We meet individuals who carry prolonged stress from financial insecurity, unstable employment, overcrowded living conditions, domestic conflict, and substance use within families. Feelings of anxiety, helplessness, anger, or hopelessness are frequently dismissed as personal weakness rather than recognised as mental health concerns.
Across India, nearly one in seven individuals experiences challenges such as depression, anxiety, or substance use disorders. Yet most do not receive care due to stigma, limited access to services, and financial constraints. In vulnerable communities, this treatment gap is even wider.
“In vulnerable communities, this treatment gap is even wider.”
We observed that people were suffering in silence — hesitant to speak, unsure where to seek support, and often reaching crisis points before receiving help. The absence of accessible and culturally sensitive mental health care deepened distress at both individual and family levels. Recognising this need, we initiated the Community Mental Health Project in July 2022 to bring structured, community-based mental health support directly to where people live.

Story of impact
Amruta entered marriage under difficult circumstances, facing emotional neglect, accusations, and betrayal. Her husband's extramarital involvement, alcohol use, and financial instability placed immense strain on her well-being. During her illness with tuberculosis, she received little support from her marital family. The distress escalated to suicidal ideation and a suicide attempt.
Through the Community Mental Health Project, Amruta was identified and engaged in structured counselling. We worked with her to stabilise her emotional state, rebuild coping mechanisms, and strengthen her support system.
With consistent sessions and follow-ups, Amruta gradually regained confidence. She completely stopped tobacco use, leading to improved physical health. Her appetite and sleep stabilised, haemoglobin levels improved, and she began focusing on nutrition and savings. She balanced work with her children's education and sought help when needed.
Her mood is now significantly brighter, stress more manageable, and her case has been successfully closed with continued follow-up support. Amruta's journey reflects how accessible, community-based mental health support can restore dignity, stability, and hope.
