The Story
About this program
In many low-income communities where we work, access to quality early childhood education is limited. Children from economically weaker backgrounds often enter primary school without foundational literacy, numeracy, or social readiness skills. Many are first-generation learners, with limited exposure to structured learning environments. As a result, they struggle to cope with formal schooling and are at greater risk of academic gaps and eventual dropout.
We observed that while primary education may be accessible, the absence of strong preschool foundations creates long-term disadvantages. Without early stimulation, structured learning, and supportive environments, children miss critical developmental milestones during their formative years.

Recognising this gap, we initiated SNEH Community Preschools in 2013 to provide affordable, structured, and holistic pre-primary education within the community itself.

Story of impact
Sumedh Shahaji Mohit
Sumedh comes from a migrant family that moved to Pune in search of employment. His father works in a small private company with an unstable income, and his mother is a homemaker caring for two young children.
Sumedh joined SNEH Community Preschool directly in Junior KG, having missed Nursery. At the time of enrolment, he struggled with basic developmental milestones. He found it difficult to hold a pencil, was unfamiliar with alphabets and numbers, and lacked exposure to structured learning.
With regular attendance, patient guidance, and consistent encouragement from teachers, Sumedh gradually began to improve. Through activity-based learning and personalised support, he developed writing skills, recognised and pronounced alphabets confidently, identified numbers, and began writing Hindi letters.
Today, Sumedh attends school regularly, shares his learning experiences with his mother, and participates actively in class. His progress reflects how early, structured support can bridge developmental gaps and strengthen a child's confidence and readiness for formal education.
